BIRG - 24h Local Train Travel + Rome Public Transportation Ticket
Particularly good for those traveling to Rome for 1 day is a ticket, called BIRG (Biglietto Integrato Regionale Giornaliero = 24h regional combined ticket). It provides round trip train travel from Civitavecchia to Rome + all day public transportation (bus, metro and tram) in Rome. This is not a Trenitalia (the Italian railway system) ticket, but an actual Rome public transportation ticket by ATAC. BIRG tickets as well as normal Regional train tickets, can only be used on trains identified as “Reg” or “RV”, they cannot be used on “IC”, or "FB” trains, as those are more expensive.
Exiting the Port and Walking to the Train Station
Cruise Travelers can take a free shuttle bus from the ship pier to the port exit. Starting at the end of April 2014, the free shuttle drop off point was moved to the northmost Port exit, which is the one located furthest away from the train Station. Allocate 30 additional minutes to move from the shuttle drop off area to the train station. The train station can also be reached by public transportation, however it may not be enough to move the large number of people arriving at once. It is possible that you may have to walk from the port exit to the train station. See map.
